A fair side-by-side of flexible gabion walls and rigid reinforced concrete walls — and when each is the better choice.
Gabion walls are flexible and free-draining; RCC walls are rigid and slim. Gabions usually win on uneven or settling ground, near water, on remote hill sites and where local stone is available. RCC usually wins where space is tight or a thin, very tall or architectural wall is needed.

Where a gravity section becomes too wide, reinforced soil walls with gabion facia units let the backfill itself carry the load, reaching greater heights with a stone face.
They work differently. A gabion wall resists soil by its weight and flexes with ground movement; a concrete wall is rigid. On settling ground or near water a gabion wall often performs better; where space is tight, concrete is usually preferred.
It drains freely through the stone, but a filter layer behind it is needed so fine soil does not wash out.
