Borders, airports, prisons, substations, depots and plants use layered fencing: a mesh fence, barbed wire on angled arms, and coils of concertina. Each layer slows an intruder in a different way. This is how they are built, and what to specify.
| Layer | Product | Typical specification |
|---|---|---|
| Main fence | Chain link or welded mesh | 50 mm mesh, 3.15–4.0 mm wire, 2.4–3.0 m high, galvanized or PVC coated |
| Top: Y-angle or cranked arms | Barbed wire | 3–5 strands per arm, IS 278 2.5 mm line wire |
| Top coil | Concertina coil | 600 mm razor tape coil in the Y-angle |
| Ground barrier | Concertina coils | one or more rows of 600–900 mm coils in front of the fence |
| Anti-dig | Mesh or barbed wire | fence mesh buried below ground, or a strand along the base |
A Y-angle is a post top with two arms in a Y, each carrying barbed wire, with a concertina coil laid in the V between them. It is the standard top for high-security perimeters; single cranked (L) arms leaning outwards are used where one side faces the risk.
