Area is taken as a square plot (1 acre = 4,047 m², about 254 m of boundary); enter the boundary length if you know it. Barbed wire at 146 g/m (IS 278 size 1); chain link at 2.30 kg/m² (10 gauge) or 1.47 kg/m² (12 gauge). Add a little for gates, corners and tying off.
| Type | What it is | Weight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barbed wire (kaata taar) | two twisted wires with barbs, strung in strands on posts | 136–155 g/m (2.50 mm, barbs at 75 mm) — about 6.9 m per kg | farms, plantations, long boundaries; cheapest |
| Chain link (fencing jali) | woven diamond mesh in rolls | 2.30 kg/m² (50 mm, 10 gauge) | plots, factories, schools; keeps animals out |
| Welded mesh (weld mesh jali) | rigid welded grid, panels or rolls | 2.45 kg/m² (50 × 50 mm, 10 gauge) | compound walls, guards, gardens |
| Concertina / razor wire | bladed tape on a spring core, in coils | about 7.7 kg per 600 mm coil | wall tops, security perimeters |
| GI line wire and binding wire | plain galvanized wire to carry and tie the fence | 99 g/m (8 gauge), 61 g/m (10 gauge) | line wires, ties, stays |
PVC coated versions of chain link, welded mesh and wire last longer in rain, coastal air and on farms using fertiliser. All fencing products →
A square one-acre plot has about 254 m of boundary. Five strands of barbed wire need about 1270 m — roughly 185 kg of 2.50 mm barbed wire with barbs every 75 mm, or about 122 kg of the lighter 12 × 14 gauge with barbs every 150 mm. A 1.5 m high chain link fence round the same acre is 381 m² — about 877 kg in 10 gauge or 559 kg in 12 gauge. Long, narrow plots have more boundary; use the calculator with the real length.
Fencing wire is sold by weight, so thinner wire always looks cheaper per metre. Ask for the wire diameter in mm and the weight per metre or per square metre, and compare on that: barbed wire length per kg, chain link jali weights, wire gauge chart.
About 254 m of boundary for a square acre; five strands is about 1270 m, roughly 185 kg of 2.50 mm barbed wire.
Barbed wire in four or five strands for the lowest cost; chain link where small animals must be kept out; PVC coated where rain and fertiliser would attack the zinc.
About 6.9 m of 2.50 mm barbed wire with barbs every 75 mm, and up to 12.8 m of the lightest IS 278 size.
The common name for wire fencing of farms and plots — usually barbed wire or chain link jali on posts.
