PVC coated wire is priced by the kilo and used by the metre. This chart and calculator convert between them for every common core size.
| Core (mm) | Outside (mm) | Steel (g/m) | PVC (g/m) | Total (g/m) | Metres per kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.25 | 2.25 | 9.6 | 3.7 | 13.3 | 74.9 |
| 1.60 | 2.60 | 15.8 | 4.5 | 20.2 | 49.4 |
| 2.00 | 3.00 | 24.7 | 5.3 | 30.0 | 33.4 |
| 2.20 | 3.20 | 29.8 | 5.7 | 35.6 | 28.1 |
| 2.50 | 3.50 | 38.5 | 6.4 | 44.9 | 22.3 |
| 2.70 | 3.70 | 44.9 | 6.8 | 51.7 | 19.3 |
| 3.40 | 4.40 | 71.3 | 8.3 | 79.5 | 12.6 |
| 3.90 | 4.90 | 93.8 | 9.3 | 103.1 | 9.7 |
Steel at 7.85 g/cm³, PVC at 1.35 g/cm³. Check the PVC share before comparing a price per kg with a price per metre — a thicker jacket adds metres-cost, not kilos.
Two wires with the same core can differ in jacket thickness. Per kilo, the thinner jacket looks dearer; per metre, it may be cheaper — and it protects less. IS 16014:2024 sets a nominal 0.50 mm (minimum 0.40 mm) jacket for gabion wire. Always compare core, outside diameter and metres per kg together.
Our PVC coated GI wire page covers cores, zinc and service life; HSN is 7217 90 99 at 18% GST (HSN codes).
About 51.7 g per metre with a 0.5 mm jacket (3.70 mm outside) — roughly 19.3 m per kg.
From about 75 m for a 1.25 mm core to about 10 m for a 3.90 mm core, with a 0.5 mm jacket. See the chart.
