A gabion box — also called a gabion basket, gabion cage or wire crate — is a rectangular cage woven from double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh and packed on site with hard, durable stone. Because the mesh is twisted rather than welded, a single broken wire will not unravel the panel — load keeps distributing across the whole structure.
Stacked and laced together, the boxes form a gabion wall: a gravity retaining structure that drains freely, tolerates settlement without cracking, and grows stronger over time as silt and vegetation bind the fill together. See our gabion wall design guide.

Standard boxes are 1.5, 2, 3 or 4 m long × 1 m wide × 1 m high, and 2, 3 or 4 m long × 1 m wide × 0.5 or 0.3 m high. Other sizes are made to order. Under IS 16014:2024 the tolerance on the ordered size is ±5% on length and width, ±5% on heights above 0.3 m and ±10% at 0.3 m and below.
One internal diaphragm every 1 m of length — so a 2 m box has one, a 3 m box two and a 4 m box three. Diaphragms hold the box in shape while it is being filled and stop the stone bellying the face out.
Heavily galvanized (GI) wire suits most land-based work. Choose PVC coated over galvanized where the gabions stay wet or the ground is aggressive — permanent immersion, tidal and coastal zones, and soils with harsh chemistry. The PVC keeps water and salts away from the zinc, which is what actually decides service life.
Yes — gabion boxes are also called gabion baskets, and many BOQs call them wire crates. If yours cites MoRTH clause 2503.3, read this before you quote.
Hard, durable stone sized larger than the mesh opening, so nothing escapes through the mesh. For 10×12 mesh (D = 100 mm) that means stone comfortably above 100 mm. Well-graded angular stone packs tighter and settles less than rounded river boulders.
