A revet (reno) mattress is a shallow rectangular unit of 6×8 double twisted hexagonal mesh, divided into cells by diaphragms and filled with stone. Because it is only 0.17 to 0.30 m thick and 2 m wide, it spreads like a blanket over slopes and beds rather than standing as a wall.
It resists scour where flowing water would carry loose stone away, and because it is flexible it keeps protecting even as the bank beneath it settles or is undermined.

It is a thin, wide gabion unit laid flat to armour a surface rather than retain it — river beds, bank slopes, channel linings and the aprons in front of structures. Its flexibility lets it follow scour and settlement instead of being undermined like a rigid slab.
0.17 m, 0.23 m and 0.30 m as standard, in 6×8 mesh (D = 60 mm). Because every one of these is 0.3 m or less, the height tolerance under IS 16014:2024 is ±10%, while length and width stay at ±5%.
Thickness and mesh. A mattress is 0.17–0.30 m thick in 6×8 mesh and works as surface armour; a gabion box is typically 0.5–1 m high in 8×10 or 10×12 mesh and works as a gravity structure. Many river works use both — boxes for the bank face, mattresses for the bed and toe.
