Thin, wide gabion units laid flat to armour river beds, banks and channels against scour — flexible enough to follow the ground and settle into it.
A revet (reno) mattress is a shallow rectangular unit of 6×8 double twisted hexagonal mesh, divided into cells by diaphragms and filled with stone. Because it is only 0.17 to 0.30 m thick and 2 m wide, it spreads like a blanket over slopes and beds rather than standing as a wall.
It resists scour where flowing water would carry loose stone away, and because it is flexible it keeps protecting even as the bank beneath it settles or is undermined.
