Gabion Box FAQ

Straight answers to what engineers, contractors and buyers ask us most — mesh sizes, IS 16014:2024 tolerances, coatings and what we need to quote.

What is a gabion box?

A gabion box is a rectangular cage made of mechanically woven, double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh that is filled on site with hard stone. Internal diaphragms divide it into cells so it keeps its shape while filling. Stacked and laced together, gabions form flexible, free-draining gravity structures such as retaining walls, river bank protection and check dams.

Which Indian Standard covers gabions?

IS 16014:2024 (second revision) covers mechanically woven, double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh gabions, revet mattresses, sack gabions, soil-reinforcement facia units and rockfall netting. It sets the mesh types, wire requirements and dimensional tolerances that tender specifications in India normally refer to. We manufacture to the standard or clause named in your drawing or BOQ.

What mesh sizes are used for gabions?

IS 16014:2024 designates mesh by type, each with a nominal opening D:

10×12 — D = 100 mm (gabions, sack gabions, facia units, rockfall netting)
8×10 — D = 80 mm (gabions, sack gabions, facia units, rockfall netting)
6×8 — D = 60 mm (revet mattresses, rockfall netting)

The mesh opening tolerance is ±10% of D.

What are the dimensional tolerances for a gabion box under IS 16014:2024?

Tolerances apply to the ordered size, before stone filling. Length and width: ±5%. Height above 0.3 m: ±5%. Height of 0.3 m or less (typically revet mattresses): ±10% as given in the product tables. So a 2.0 m long gabion is acceptable between 1.90 m and 2.10 m. Rockfall netting rolls follow a separate rule: length +1 m / −0 m and width ±D.

Should I choose galvanized (GI) or PVC coated gabions?

Galvanized wire suits dry and moderately exposed structures. PVC coated GI wire adds an extruded PVC jacket over the zinc, a second barrier against water, salts and soil chemicals. Specify PVC coating for permanently submerged works, river training, tidal or coastal zones and chemically aggressive ground, where zinc is lost fastest.

What is the difference between a gabion box, a revet mattress and a sack gabion?

A gabion box is a deep unit used to build walls and gravity structures. A revet mattress is a thin, wide unit (height usually 0.3 m or less, 6×8 mesh) laid flat to armour channel beds and banks against scour. A sack gabion is a cylindrical unit that can be filled and placed quickly, including underwater, for emergency closure and scour protection.

Why use a gabion wall instead of a concrete (RCC) retaining wall?

Gabion walls are flexible, so they tolerate settlement and ground movement without cracking. They are free-draining, which relieves water pressure behind the wall. They need no formwork or curing and use stone that is often available near the site. Concrete is preferable where space is very tight or a rigid, thin section is essential.

What stone should be used to fill gabions?

Hard, durable, non-weathering stone that is larger than the mesh opening, so it cannot pass through the mesh. Well-graded fill packed by hand at the exposed face gives a dense, stable unit. Follow the grading given in your project specification.

Why double-twisted mesh rather than welded or single-twist mesh?

In double-twisted mesh two wires are twisted together at every junction. If one wire is cut, the damage stays local and the panel does not unravel. Welded mesh can fail at its joints and single-twist mesh can run a break across the panel.

Do you manufacture gabions yourselves?

Yes. Agarwal Gabions manufactures machine-woven gabions and wire mesh at two works in West Bengal — Jangalpur (Howrah) and Ethelbari (Birpara) — under an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system (Cert. No. 305024011282Q), with raw material procured to ISI standards.

Do you supply gabions to North East India, Sikkim and Bhutan?

Yes. Our Ethelbari works is close to Sikkim, Bhutan and the North East, which shortens transit and lowers delivered cost for heavy gabion orders. Bhutan enquiries can call +975 1711-0844. See where we supply.

What details do you need to quote for gabions?

Send the box sizes and quantity of each, the mesh type (for example 10×12), mesh, selvedge and lacing wire diameters, coating (GI or PVC coated), the governing standard or tender clause, the site location and the required delivery date. A BOQ or drawing is ideal. Request a quotation or WhatsApp +91 89440-32355.
