Flood and irrigation departments use gabions because they stay flexible as the bed scours, drain freely and are built from local stone. In permanent or polluted water the wire must be PVC coated.

Yes, wherever they stay wet, sit in tidal or polluted water, or cannot be repaired easily. Plain galvanized wire suits dry or occasionally wetted works.
A flexible gabion mattress or mesh layer laid at the toe of a bank; as the river scours, it settles into the scour hole and keeps protecting the bank.
Where boxes cannot be filled in the dry: emergency breach closing and placing into flowing water by crane.
