A Galfan gabion box is woven from wire coated with zinc–5% aluminium alloy instead of plain zinc, and usually PVC coated over it. It is specified where the structure must last longest — permanent water, coasts and aggressive ground — and appears in tenders across J&K, Kerala, Gujarat, Assam and Uttarakhand.

A 2×1×1 m box weighs about 17.9 kg, the same as Zn + PVC.
Zinc–aluminium protects steel longer than the same mass of plain zinc, and PVC over a Zn–Al core is the only system IS 16014:2024 rates beyond 120 years of working life (gabion lifespan). Galfan wire itself: PVC coated Galfan wire.
