On hill roads and in tunnels, galvanized chain link mesh is pinned to the rock and sprayed with shotcrete, or laid over a cut slope to hold loose material. Here is how it is specified — and where double twisted rockfall netting is the better choice.
Highway slope-protection estimates in India describe it as galvanized steel chain link wire mesh, mesh about 50 mm × 50 mm, in light wire (2 mm in an NHIDCL estimate for NH-10), supplied and fixed, measured per square metre of slope. Heavier wire is used where the mesh must carry load on its own.
| Mesh | Wire | Weight (kg/m²) | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 mm | 2.00 mm (14 gauge) | 0.95 | reinforcement under shotcrete |
| 50 mm | 2.50 mm (12 gauge) | 1.47 | shotcrete, light surface cover |
| 50 mm | 3.15 mm (10 gauge) | 2.30 | surface cover, catch fences |
| 50 mm | 4.00 mm (8 gauge) | 3.65 | heavier cover and fences |
Weights are ours, worked from mesh and wire; 2.00 mm in 50 mm mesh is lighter than the IS 2721 schedule and is made to order. Order by area: slope area plus overlaps at every joint and the anchorage at the crest. Weight calculator.
| Chain link mesh | Double twisted rockfall netting | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | single wires wound into helices | wires twisted together at every joint |
| If one wire is cut or breaks | that helix can run and open a strip | the twists hold; the damage stays local |
| Best for | reinforcing shotcrete; light surface cover | drapery over rock faces that shed stone |
| Standard | IS 2721:2003 | IS 16014:2024 |
| Coating | galvanized or PVC | heavily galvanized or PVC |
So: under shotcrete, where the concrete carries the load and the mesh is locked in, chain link is the economical choice. Hung free over a face where rocks fall, use double twisted rockfall netting — a rock that cuts one wire does not unzip the net (specification). We make both.
Send the item from the BOQ with the area in square metres and the site. We supply the mesh in rolls sized for handling on the slope, galvanized or PVC coated, with binding wire. Bolts, pins and shotcrete are the contractor’s. Get a quote →
Yes — pinned to the slope under shotcrete, or as surface cover over weathered rock and soil. For free drapery over rock faces that shed stone, double twisted rockfall netting is the better choice.
Usually galvanized chain link of about 50 × 50 mm mesh in light wire, fixed to the rock with bolts or pins before spraying.
Chain link is made of single wound wires, so a cut wire can open a strip. Rockfall netting is double twisted, so a cut wire stays local. Chain link follows IS 2721, rockfall netting IS 16014.
