Enter the length and height of your wall. The calculator uses the Ministry of Rural Development’s typical gabion wall sections to count the boxes, the steel and the stone — and one tap sends the result to us for a delivered price.

Courses are 1 m high, including one course buried 1 m below ground as in the MoRD sections. Volume = length × sum of the course widths; boxes = volume ÷ box volume (rounded up). Weights are our production figures for the box, with diaphragms and lacing wire; stone at 1.7 t/m³. An early estimate — the drawing for your site decides the final count.
A gabion wall is built in courses of 1 m high boxes, widest at the bottom, with the bottom course buried 1 m below ground. For walls of 2 to 5 m above ground the calculator uses the course widths of the Ministry of Rural Development’s typical sections (2015):
| Height above ground | Course widths, top to bottom | Gabion per metre of wall |
|---|---|---|
| 2 m | 1 m · 1.5 m · 2 m | 4.5 m³ |
| 3 m | 1 m · 1.5 m · 2 m · 2.5 m | 7 m³ |
| 4 m | 1 m · 1.5 m · 2 m · 2.5 m · 3.5 m | 10.5 m³ |
| 5 m | 1 m · 1.5 m · 2 m · 2.5 m · 3 m · 4 m | 14 m³ |
Example: a 50 m long wall standing 3 m above ground (4 m including the buried course) holds 350 m³ of gabion — about 175 boxes of 2 × 1 × 1 m, 2.6 t of 2.70 mm GI mesh and about 595 t of stone.
These sections suit low walls on firm ground. Surcharge, water, poor soil or a taller wall change the section — see gabion wall design as per IS code, and price the item with the MoRTH rate analysis.
| Box | Volume (m³) | GI 2.70 mm (kg) | GI 3.00 mm (kg) | PVC coated (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 x 1 x 1 m | 1.5 | 11.0 | 13.9 | 13.2 |
| 2 x 1 x 1 m | 2 | 15.1 | 18.9 | 17.9 |
| 3 x 1 x 1 m | 3 | 21.7 | 27.0 | 25.7 |
| 4 x 1 x 1 m | 4 | 28.3 | 35.1 | 33.4 |
Every size, including 0.5 m and 0.3 m high boxes: gabion box sizes and weights.
Multiply the wall length by the sum of the course widths to get the gabion volume, then divide by the box volume. A 50 m long wall standing 3 m above ground on the MoRD typical section is 350 m³ — about 175 boxes of 2 × 1 × 1 m.
About 1.7 tonnes per cubic metre of gabion (stone of 26 kN/m³ packed at 35% voids, IS 14458 Part 6).
On the MoRD typical sections, for walls 2, 3, 4 and 5 m above ground (plus 1 m below), the base is 2.0, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.0 m. A site-specific design checks sliding, overturning and bearing.
