Barbed wire (kaata taar) is two galvanized line wires twisted together, carrying four-point barbs at regular spacing. It marks a line and deters crossing with very little steel, which keeps both cost and installation time down.
The Indian Standard is IS 278:2009, Galvanized steel barbed wire for fencing. It fixes six sizes with their weight per metre, two barb types, the zinc coating and a breaking-load test, and gives a designation you can write into an order — e.g. “Steel Barbed Wire, A-1 IS 278”. Where a boundary must stop people rather than mark a line, use concertina coil — compare them.

Boundary demarcation and deterrence — as a fence in its own right on posts, or as topping above chain-link fencing on extension arms. It marks a line and discourages crossing; it is not a high-security barrier.
Barbed wire deters; concertina coil obstructs. The barbs on barbed wire are twisted points, while concertina carries pressed razor blades on a spring steel core that springs back when forced. Choose concertina where the boundary has to stop people rather than mark a line.

From about 6.5 to 12.8 m, depending on the size. The common 2.50 mm wire with barbs every 75 mm (IS 278 size 1) weighs 136–155 g/m, so 1 kg is 6.5–7.4 m and a 25 kg reel is 161–184 m. See the length per kg chart.
12 gauge is about 2.5 mm (IS 278 uses 2.50 mm line wire) and 14 gauge about 2.0 mm (used for the point wire in sizes 3 to 6).
