Jammu sits where the Shivalik hills meet the plains, on the Tawi, with the Chenab to the west. The rivers and the seasonal nallahs of the dry kandi belt flood suddenly in heavy rain, cutting banks, gullies and road embankments. North of the city, the highway to Kashmir climbs through slopes that slide and drop rock in every wet spell.
