Jorhat lies south of the Brahmaputra, opposite Majuli — a river island that has lost a large part of its land to erosion. Bank protection for Majuli and the south bank is a long-running programme, and much of it is staged from Jorhat. In the town itself the Bhogdoi river and the drains flood in heavy rain.

Jorhat is supplied from our Ethelbari works by road up the Brahmaputra valley. Island and river works need material at the ghat before the water rises.
The Brahmaputra rises from about May and peaks in July and August. Erosion works are built from November to March.
River and island works: PVC coated mattresses (0.30 m is common on river banks) and boxes over a geotextile, with sack gabions for aprons and emergencies.
Fencing: chain link to IS 2721 and barbed wire to IS 278.
