The river along its northern edge erodes banks and threatens embankments every flood season; the hills that ring and cross the city are cut for houses and roads, and those cuts slip in heavy rain. Revet mattresses, usually 0.23 or 0.30 m thick and PVC coated, laid on a filter so the drain bed and banks do not scour in a flash flood.
A gabion wall at the toe holds a cut slope and drains it, which is what most small slips need. Larger slides need a geotechnical design; the wall is then one part of it.
