Dhanbad is the centre of the Jharia coalfield. Mines, washeries, sidings and overburden dumps cover the district, and they need perimeter fencing, drainage that keeps run-off off the dumps, and walls at the toe of dump slopes. Subsidence and old workings make rigid walls crack; gabions flex with the ground instead.

Fencing goes up year round. Drains and dump walls are built before the monsoon, which runs from about mid-June to September.
Fencing: chain link to IS 2721 (commonly 50 or 75 mm mesh), welded mesh to IS 4948, barbed wire to IS 278, concertina coil (600 mm is the usual tender size) — galvanized or PVC coated.
Mine drains: PVC coated mattresses where mine water is acidic.
Dump toe walls: heavily galvanized 10×12 boxes, 2.70 mm mesh wire.
