Gorakhpur lies where the Rapti and Rohini come down from Nepal, and the district floods in most monsoons. The embankments that protect the city and its villages are raised, repaired and armoured year after year, and when one breaches, sack gabions are what close it.

The rivers flood from about July to September. Embankment works are built from November to June; sack gabions are for the emergencies during the flood.

Fencing: chain link to IS 2721 (commonly 50 or 75 mm mesh), welded mesh to IS 4948, barbed wire to IS 278, concertina coil (600 mm is the usual tender size) — galvanized or PVC coated.
