Uttar Pradesh is a state of big rivers. The Ganga and Yamuna cross it, and in the east the Ghaghra, Rapti, Rohini, Gandak and Sharda come down from Nepal and flood the Terai and Purvanchal districts almost every monsoon. Embankments, spurs and bank revetments along them are among the largest civil works in the state.
In the south, Bundelkhand's rocky, drought-prone uplands need check dams and watershed works that hold water and soil. Across the state, new expressways, industrial corridors and institutions need drainage, culvert protection and fencing in large quantities. The rivers flood from about July to September. Embankment and river works are built from November to June, with material on site before the rains; sack gabions are for the emergencies during them.

Fencing: chain link to IS 2721 (commonly 50 or 75 mm mesh), welded mesh to IS 4948, barbed wire to IS 278, concertina coil (600 mm is the usual tender size) — galvanized or PVC coated.
