North Bengal is our home ground: our Ethelbari works at Birpara sits in the Dooars. The region's rivers — the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka and Mahananda — flood and erode their banks each monsoon, while the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills need slope and road protection.

This is the shortest supply line we have: the Ethelbari works is at Birpara, in the Dooars, inside the region it serves. Material for Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Siliguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong goes out from there without a trunk haul first.
That matters more than it sounds. Freight is a real share of the landed price of gabions, and it is the part of a quotation that varies most between suppliers — a works in the region you are building in is usually the whole difference.
The Dooars and the Darjeeling hills take heavy rain from June to September, and the hill rivers change character completely between seasons — wide braided beds in the monsoon, modest channels afterwards.
River training is therefore dry-season work, planned in the months after the rains. Jhora training and hill drainage repairs follow the same calendar.
What tenders here specify: mostly 4 mm GI wire crates @ 32 kg/10 sqm, some IS 280 diagonal-mesh crates (100x100, 4 mm GI) and 10x12, 3.0 mm GI. We supply every one of these lines — every gabion spec decoded.
For the braided Dooars rivers — the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka and Mahananda — the usual arrangement is revet mattresses on the bed and lower slope with gabion boxes above, PVC coated where the work stays submerged.
For hill roads and estate works above the rivers, galvanized boxes in 8×10 or 10×12 mesh are normally what is specified.
