A gabion wall here is built by your contractor from boxes we manufacture and deliver: double twisted mesh boxes to IS 16014:2024, laced together on site and packed with stone. We supply the boxes, diaphragms and lacing wire, cut to the sizes on your drawing; the excavation, stone and building are the contractor’s.
Three things about Kolkata ground decide how the wall is built. The soil is soft delta silt and clay with a high water table, which is exactly where a flexible, free-draining gabion wall earns its place — it settles with the ground instead of cracking. A filter is essential: a non-woven geotextile behind and beneath the boxes stops the fine silt washing into the stone. There is no stone on the delta, so the fill travels in by road or rail, usually from the quarries of the Rajmahal hills in Jharkhand — it is worth pricing the stone before the boxes.

Kolkata, Howrah and South Bengal are supplied from our works at Jangalpur, Howrah — close to the city and to the trunk routes south towards the Sundarbans and west along the Damodar.
Boxes travel folded flat in bundles with their lacing wire, so a single truck carries a great deal of wall; only the stone has to be sourced near the site.
Build in the dry months, roughly November to May. The monsoon from June to September raises the Hooghly and the canals, and the cyclone seasons around May and October–November are when the Sundarbans embankments are tested.
Embankment and canal work is best finished before the rains, with the toe and any apron in place first.
What tenders here specify: mostly 4 mm GI wire crates @ 32 kg/10 sqm for irrigation and embankment works. We supply every one of these lines — every gabion spec decoded.
Tidal, saline or permanently wet work — Sundarbans embankments, creeks, the tidal Hooghly — specify PVC coated over galvanized wire. Salt water is the most aggressive condition these products meet.
Retaining walls and drains in the city are usually heavily galvanized boxes, 10×12 mesh with 2.70 mm wire, on a compacted base with a geotextile filter.
Canal and embankment slopes take revet mattresses, with gabion boxes at the toe.

Not from the delta, which has none. Boulders usually come in by road or rail from quarries in the Rajmahal hills of Jharkhand. Stone 1.5–2.5 times the mesh opening is right — about 150–250 mm for 10×12 mesh.
Yes — it is where they are strongest. A gabion wall is flexible and drains itself, so it tolerates settlement on soft silt and clay that would crack a rigid wall. Lay a geotextile filter behind and beneath it.
