Kerala takes two monsoons a year onto steep laterite and soil slopes, and landslides in the Western Ghats have repeatedly cut roads and destroyed settlements. On the coast, the sea eats into the shore and the rivers — the Periyar, Pamba, Bharathapuzha and many more — flood their banks.
