Punjab and Haryana are crossed by rivers that flood the plains when the hills get heavy rain — the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi in Punjab, the Ghaggar and Yamuna along Haryana's edges, and the Markanda and Tangri. Embankments breach in big floods, and along the Shivalik foothills the seasonal torrents called choes cut gullies and wash out roads.
