Himachal's roads follow the Beas, Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab through steep valleys, and recent monsoons have shown how quickly rivers in spate can take out road embankments, bridges and the slopes behind them. Rebuilding and protecting those roads is the core of gabion work in the state.

Gabion walls and revet mattresses along the bank, with a launching apron at the toe so the protection settles into scour holes instead of being undermined. PVC coated wire is advisable in the river.
